Silhouette | She jumped for joy and I took  the picture... I wanted to do this with the kids for a while now and lazy half term morning was the perfect time. Right, camera ready and go. This picture is taken with the intention to underexpose for a dark silhouette effect. No flash, ISO 2000 (so high to maintain necessary shutter speed) and shutter speed 1/500 (to make sure we catch movement in mid-air). I am assuming a bit of photography understanding here so for those who have no idea yet what I mean - set your DSLRs to 'sports' program for similar effect.

| Peter Pan | and then the boy had a go to... This time the idea was to actually see his face so I used a bit of flash (-1.3 ev) bounced of the wall behind me. ISO 800, f2.8 and shutter speed 1/250 which without flash would most likely be too low to freeze motion... flash does it for you but this is a long story for another day.

This is a great little photography project... the prize? some magical pictures and fun memories. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: no children were hurt during shooting and all the reasonable safety measures were taken :) Do make sure that the bed is wide enough!

KATE NIELEN PHOTOGRAPHY
Hi Alyssa! Thank you. There is no secret really. These are shot on Nikon D700 and this camera is very good in handling high ISO. I would suggest adding some ambient light and lowering ISO to lets say 800 for similar result when shooting with cameras not built for low light... These shots are edited in Aperture 3 (I must be one of very few photographers not using Lightroom much). Editing is minimal - RAW fine tuning and VSCO film preset Ilford Delta 3200. There is hardly any cropping (this will keep the visible grain down too). Hope this helps!

Gorgeous shots! What do you use to take the grain out from the high ISO?
